The shelter
An — 安 — is written with 宀, the roof, above 女, the person: someone made steady beneath a roof. Beside the Marble Mountains, the five peaks Emperor Minh Mạng named in 1837, this house does not borrow the mountain’s name — it keeps the character’s original meaning: a roof overhead, and a place to come home to.

The house
Dark timber, deep eaves and low lantern light borrow the language of the Hội An trading houses — the tube houses, the assembly halls, the covered bridge — carried an hour north to the mountains.
